Government Calls for Stronger School Quality Oversight Ahead of Education Reforms

Government urges school quality assurers to strengthen oversight and monitoring as Tanzania prepares for major education reforms and structural change

The government has directed School Quality Assurers across the country to strengthen monitoring and supervision of education standards as Tanzania prepares to implement major structural reforms in the education sector.

Speaking during the opening of an induction training for district-level School Quality Assurers in Bagamoyo, Minister for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Adolf Mkenda, emphasized the critical role of the officers in ensuring that education policies, laws and national guidelines are effectively implemented at the grassroots level.

He explained that quality assurers serve as a key link between policy formulation and classroom implementation, particularly as the country moves forward with reforms focusing on compulsory education and competency-based learning systems.

The minister also instructed the officers to ensure timely reporting of challenges affecting schools, including shortages of classrooms, teaching materials and infrastructure gaps, so that local government authorities can take corrective measures without delay.

Beginning in the 2027/2028 academic year, the education structure will change, with primary education reduced to six years while compulsory education will extend to ten years from Standard One to Form Four. The transition is expected to create a temporary double-cohort intake before the system stabilizes.

Meanwhile, education officials highlighted continued government investment in technical and vocational education, although challenges such as limited workshops, equipment and skilled instructors still require attention. Authorities have also encouraged local government councils to prioritize education funding in their budgets to ensure schools operate effectively and support ongoing reforms aimed at improving learning outcomes nationwide.
